Guess what I got …

1. It’s big and black …
2. It’s the kind of purchase that you might expect from a recently dysthymic person now set upon by the mania of spring …
3. It’ll make me want to spend more time exercising in the den …

A big screen, flat panel TV!

The thing seems so huge. It takes up the whole cabinet top. I sit 10′ away from it and still feel like I might like to back up a couple feet to watch it more easily.

The last time I bought a TV was 1993 and it was used. No remote control, but you could hook cable and a VCR to it (albeit with a special splitter). That TV still work fine. I hate to throw away some thing that works perfectly. But the thing is … you can’t play DVD’s on it because it doesn’t understand digital input.

I’ve been holding off, waiting, knowing that big screen prices would drop after 2006 (because that’s when the networks would start broadcasting in HDTV and so everyone would go out and buy one). I’ve been holding off, waiting for the TV’s to get thinner and for the technology glitches to sort themselves out. But this summer, my favorite video store stopped carrying VHS. And now I’ve decided to try Netflix and don’t want to have to watch the movies on my laptop. Plus I’ve now got a housemate that I want to watch movies with and that doesn’t work so well on a laptop. So, I went cruising last night and happened on a good deal on a floor model that hadn’t been used long and had to go to make way for the new models coming out next month. It got great ratings on the internet. So, I decided to just go for it. Now, I can play movies directly from my laptop into my TV. And, duh-hayam, they look fine. I can’t wait for Casino Royale to come out on DVD.

I’m looking forward to seeing bananadiameter and schmecky on next month. It’ll sorta be like having you two in my den with me. (Hey, can you remind me again what the air dates are for your shows?)

And, yes, Dad, I put it down in “your” room. πŸ™‚

  1. Wow. That’s exciting. I tended to deride my ex for being such a gadget freak, but in my single status I find myself being much more appreciative of them myself.

I bet you’ll love Netflix. Happy watching!

    • Yeah, I used to tease my male friends about these things, calling this their “bachelor TV”. (*nods* to . πŸ˜‰ But my neighbor calls hers the “Desperate Housewives” TV. πŸ™‚

      • I likes my movies to look like movies, ya know? πŸ™‚

But what really pisses me off is when I watch a broadcast movie and they put up the disclaimer, “This movie has been modified from the original version. It has been reformatted to fit your tv screen.” “Like Bloody Hell!”, I cries! “It’s been chopped to fit the peons screens, not mine!”

      • I haven’t seen one yet.. but am hopeful to towards the end of this year. I’ve read that S.E.D. is essentially dead at this point. The working group has stopped trying to develop it. So, Laser is going to be the next big thing. The thing I like about it is that it uses a fraction of the power that the other types use. As well, as it’s got lasers! plus they claim it will be cheaper than LCD or Plasma, or DLP. Go go technology. Now if I could only find a decent tablet pc for under 800 bucks. Oh,.. and if the price of a car computer would drop that’d be great too. I’m currently lusting after the infill g4 by maxan. It will be sold by mp3car.com in the next few months.
