There is nothing worse than feeling ignored. In psych grad school, we played this game where a group of 8 people had to pretend they had to plan to go live on a desert island together. Everyone in the group was told how each person should be treated by everyone else, except for the person that was to be treated that way. So, there was “Condescend to me” person, a “Dismiss everything I say” person, a “Treat me like I’m brilliant” person, and so on. It didn’t take but 10 minutes for the group dynamic to take shape and heightened emotions to arise. Processing it afterwards, the teacher revealed that previous exercises have shown, and the target person in the group confirmed this, that the most long-term damaging way to be treated was being relegated to the “Ignore me” position.
